RYAN MURRAY NAMED MUSIC DIRECTOR OF FRESNO GRAND OPERA

Fresno Grand Opera is pleased to announce that Ryan Murray, who made his Company debut in our recent productions of Tosca and A Streetcar Named Desire, has been appointed Music Director of the Company beginning with the 2015/16 season. Mr. Murray becomes the first music director in the company’s history.
In his role as Music Director of the Company, Mr. Murray will work closely with General Director Matthew Buckman on programming and casting the Company’s main stage productions, will oversee the Fresno Grand Opera Orchestra, and will conduct the main stage productions at the William Saroyan Theatre.

Ryan is a brilliant young conductor who is highly regarded by all of his colleagues. He is an outstanding addition to the artistic community in Fresno.”
Mr. Murray has served as Music Director of Townsend Opera in Modesto for seven years, and also serves as Associate Music Director of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Music in the Mountains Summer Festival. He is currently in Sweden, where he was selected to participate in a conducting workshop with the legendary Maestro Kurt Masur.

About Ryan Murray
Engaged to conduct professionally at the age of only 22 and just months after completing his bachelor’s degree, Ryan’s dynamic conducting, engaging persona and deeply held passion for the arts have allowed him to steadily build a robust career conducting professional orchestras ever since. At the age of 29, Ryan was selected as a winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s prestigious Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors. He spent the summer of 2014 in residence at the Salzburg Festival alongside the Vienna Philharmonic.
In addition to his new appointment with FGO, Mr. Murray also serves as Music Director of Townsend Opera, Associate Conductor for the Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Music Director for the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Music in the Mountains Summer Festival in Nevada County, California. He previously served as a Staff Conductor for the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute and the Opera Academy of California.
As well as being named a 2014 Ansbacher Fellow with the Vienna Philharmonic, Mr. Murray recently attended the Eastman School of Music’s 2015 Summer Conducting Institute featuring the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; in August he will be attending the Aurora Conducting Masterclass and Seminar to study under Maestro Kurt Masur in Trollhättan, Sweden. Mr. Murray has previously participated in conducting masterclasses at Oregon State University with Master Teacher Neil Varon, as well as Maestro Kenneth Kiesler in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Widely praised for his tireless work ethic, natural poise, and impassioned, inspired performances, Mr. Murray continues to connect deeply with orchestras and audiences alike, and has proven to be an emerging dynamo on the podium.

Fresno Grand Opera was founded in 1999 by Fresno native Edna Garabedian, winner of the 1961 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, after a successful career as an opera singer and stage director.
